work 80, not 40

2/25/2016

Picture
"Work 80 hours on your art instead of 40 for someone else because the return on your investment is greater when you work for yourself. "

What do you mean 80 hours?!
yup.
Theres another saying that goes like this:
"Work smarter, not harder."  So which is it?!

Both. The more time you put into your talent, the closer you are at leaving a job that keeps you from your talent. But then that move makes your talent your focus when you are awake, when you are asleep, when you are with family and even on vacation.

But isn't that the case already? You already think about art all the time. Whatever is on your schedule, you cannot wait to get back to art!

That is how some of us artists are. I do not want to do anything else. I don't want to work.

Ok, Doodleslice told me I have to stop using the word "Work" when I really mean to say: "I don't want to do anything outside of art." Because as he points out, I work all the time.

But you see, my kind of work is fun to me because i get paid to do art. Every week is a different art project, every day is filled with art. And since I want to earn a particular amount of money, then I need to work on art all the time. The biggest benefit is that all the revenue and profit comes home with me.

What about the smarter, not harder?
That's the biz. With the right business plan in place, you have a path to follow that allows you to make the most out of every opportunity, project, artwork and connection. Sometimes that means saying no to an "opportunity". Sometimes that means doing art as a favor for someone or a cause. Every step is clear because you have a plan in place to produce your art and grow your business... so you can leave the job that's keeping you busy 40 hours a week!

I have a wife and kids who need my attention. There is a part of your life that needs to spend time with your loved ones. I also have to sleep! So how do we find the 80 hours?

Sometimes working on your art requires thinking, not doing. planning. scheming. Thats where the hours add up to at least 80. In the shower, while driving, while watching tv, while reading, while napping, while waiting on the bus. There is a ton of Smart Time that can be used in the development, planning and application of your art business. Work Smarter.

See, if you are consumed by art like I am, then you will not want to do anything else with your time. Your job will be your art. Your work will be your art. Your life commitment will be about your art. I want to make the most of my time with art and that means I have to plan it out and execute.

Plan the work, Work the plan.
I heard that somewhere and its real. Take advantage of your creative ideas and art by having a plan to make it successful. Then stick to the plan!

-His creative origins, and his journey until today.
-How he kept true to the things that he wanted to draw, however it came to him.
-How he came to find an community of artists in Atlanta.
-How he didn't have the support for his art from an early age. -Drawing sessions with other artists.
-His advice to individuals with TONS of different creative ideas who hasn't started any of them yet.

Know Your Worth

2/1/2016

Pricing of your art can be tricky and its a constant discussion between artists. I have seen artists sell their art at a loss and other artists overprice their work.

This is one of the top answers on why art doesn't sell even though other artists are selling at that same price point. You have to find the right spot for your art. Your pricing has to fit the level of your talent, the position of your brand and the materials used in the work.

There are tons of links online with information on how to price your work, but before getting lost in the sea of information, I would like to share a couple of tips.

1. Materials
You have to be able to pay for the materials used. The price of your artwork has to take into consideration the cost of the canvas, the paints, brushes, paper, pencils, markers and anything else that goes into the art.

2. Time
How long did you take in painting this particular piece? If you sell a painting for $1,000 and it took you 2 months to paint it, then you've earned $500 a month minus materials. Keep track of your time, and if you intend to one day earn with your art enough to leave a traditional job behind, then time control becomes important.

3. Market
Who are you selling to, who's coming to your shows, who is your client? What price ranges can they afford? I've been at group art shows where people are there to drink, have fun and art is part of the atmosphere. It's tough to sell a $5,000 piece of art at a setting like that.

There are other elements that come into play when pricing your work so take your time, talk to other artists and ask their opinion. You are going to get it wrong, there's no escaping the learning process!

Just remember this: the price you ask for a piece is not its true worth if it hasn't sold at that price. Experiment with your prices, try to start low and as slowly raise your prices as collectors start buying your pieces. Don't start high and then bring down the price because you have rent to pay. It devalues your brand as an artist.

Check out the upcoming events this week as we end January and start February by visiting www.ArtIsKing.org and scrolling down the home page and I will see you there!

Presentation is Everything. Its a start.

1/17/2016

Picture

When promoting your work to potential clients and commissions, you must present your work in the same level you wish to charge.

The more you want to charge, the better your presentation must be.

Proper Presentation.
Presentation should make your brand, your art and yourself look like a professional artist, no matter at what career level you are now
Presentation is as simple as taking the time to arrange the best art in your portfolio.
Presentation is to do the best editing of the image to show the value of your work.
Presentation can be accomplished with very little money and a bit of time invested to make yourself look good.

Visual Design.
Take the time to learn how to lay text on images. Its ok to not know how to layout your promotional images, in that case get help from someone else. Throwing text on an image without rhyme or reason is Not OK.

Information.
Please include a link to purchase your work. Asking potential clients to contact you without a link to email is asking those clients to do extra work to find you. This is where a website, a simple webpage with a contact form and payment link comes in handy. You have to make it easy to collect money from clients and commissions because we want to get paid for our work, right?

There are apps and free software to help in cropping and editing the images to make them easy to share to social media. Do Not share smartphone screenshots! Take the extra time to edit the images before posting.

Remember, you want to attract attention to your art and make a sale. A series of sales creates revenue and when a client comes back to buy a second piece, they become your collector!

Focus on your Presentation, its part of the path to success.

The 4 Key Ingredients of the Art Life

1/11/2016

Picture
Whenever an artist asks me for help in selling their work, my answer always involves the 4 important ingredients in every artists business.

Here they are: Vision, Goals, Steps and Schedule.

These four ingredients require 100% participation of the artist in determining their future. We must have a Vision to aim to, a set of Goals that will allow us to achieve that Vision, an outline of the steps necessary to reach those goals and the time set aside in the schedule to allow for working on those steps.

You are invited Monday January 18, to Sam Flax and learn about the 4 Ingredients plus a step by step process to outline an easy way for each one of us to work on our Art Life! RSVP FOR FREE HERE

Art Life in 2016

1/4/2016

2015 methods will net 2015 results.

Take a look at your Art Life methods and decide what has worked and what hasn't. Then delete what didn't work in 2015 and add in new ideas and methods to 2016.

I interview at least 50 artists a year, for the Art Is King Podcast, and every one of these artists stories illustrates the fact that the Art Life is not a straight path. There are twists and turns, surprises and letdowns, successes and failure.

Through all of that, every artist finds success their own way. But you don't have to go at it alone. Atlanta has a thriving Art Community and you have to involve yourself!

Arts Organizations
Follow on social media and show up at WonderRoot, C4 Atlanta, Office of Cultural Affairs, Burnaway and Art Is King events, Plus there are new organizations and groups of artists working together for the success of all. Cultivating Cultures, AWOL, Paragon7, Creative Collage Collective and more. They share tons of resources, advice, classes and opportunities.

I am a member of every organization possible, I attend their classes, I submit applications, I follow thru on advice and resources they share online. I don't understand artists who claim that Atlanta has nothing to offer or that its the government's job to provide artists budgets.

The info is out there. There are people out there who care and work tirelessly to provide artists with opportunities.

Mentors
I have several mentors. Some of them know they are my mentors, some I am able to find time to attend their events and classes and then stay behind to ask them for specific advice. I have a Business Mentor, a Startup Mentor, Art Business Mentor, Illustration Mentor and a half dozen professional artists who's work I admire and I find time to reach out to them to get their opinions on my work and advice. One of my mentors was the mayor of Avondale Estates! He's not mayor now but he's interested in seeing me succeed and has given me his time to share.

Plus I am lucky to have a wife who is also my Business Manager. She fits in the TEAM Category but she was the first person to help me expand my art business horizons and try new methods of how to run my art biz.

Classes
In 2015 I took a business class at C4 Atlanta, startup classes at General Assembly, pitch practice at Atlanta Tech Village, attended several business talks at Tech Square Labs, OHub, Iron Yard, Industrious, DeskHub, Thoughtworks, Google and countless meet ups throuought ATL.

Classes, workshops, bootcamps, webinars, podcasts. I take every opportunity to learn something new and apply to my Art Life.
The knowledge is out there.

Put in The Work
The resources, the mentors, the classes and instruction without the hard work of the artist is useless. The artist must put in the brain power necessary to produce the Artist Bio, Artist Statement, Portfolio, applications, submissions, grants, sponsorships and marketing to help their career succeed.

I hear artists ask a lot of questions, but then produce nothing with the info provided to them. YOU should care about your art career!

Celebrate
Finish a commission project: celebrate. Finished a personal project: celebrate. The celebrations can be as simple as a Facebook or Instagram post congratulating yourself or as intricate as taking your loved ones out to dinner. Celebrate with your supporters: your spouse, your children, your parents or fellow artists. Each celebration will give you the stamina and support to move towards your next goal. After a while, your supporters will look for your next success.

Celebrate by yourself or with your team, the point is to Celebrate!

Enjoy a moment with yourself.
I enjoy a great cup of coffee, full of flavor and body. I say no to gas station coffee.

I like the aroma. I like grinding my own coffee beans. I like buying beans from different coffee houses in ATL. Dancing Goats, HodgePodge Coffeehouse and Chocolatte are my favorite spots.

I've had a coffee grinder for years now. I can grind a few cups at a time so the coffee is ready to go. I have made my coffee on drip machines, french press and stove top brewers. I don't like the plastic flavor of the home drip machines and luckily, for christmas my wife bought me a pour over pitcher.
Delicious.

Build Relationships
Use other artists success's as an idea of what you can add to your methods, but don't compare your success to theirs. No one knows the amount of work you put into your career, work that happens behind the scenes, so theres no way to know the amount of work another artist has put into their career.

But if you see an artist having success with producing an art book, then work on yours. Then ask that particular artist out for lunch, so you may have some one on one time and ask them for advice on how to get your art book as popular as theirs.

Next time you reach out to that artist, show that you have applied their advice and share the results. Prove that you are listening and learning so that they continue to provide advice, otherwise you are wasting their time.

DON'T GIVE UP
Try and try again. I don't want to do anything else with my life except art. Fine Art, Tattoos, Drawings, 2D Illustrations, Children's Books, Murals, Art Biz Classes, Teach Art, Teach Adobe, Everything Art.

I started with Tattoos in 1995 and slowly evolved other parts of my Art Life. Focus on one part of your Art Life and push hard. No matter the obstacles, the naysayers, the twists that real life throws at you. Focus. Learn. Earn.

This is DTM of DeltaTangoMike, founder of Art Is King wishing you a successful 2016. Focus on becoming a Thriving Artist and let go of the starving artist mentality. Success is yours!

The Mission: to get Kamikaze Animated on TV. The Plan: publish a weekly comic page to build an audience that Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon or Netflix will not be able to ignore.

How is that going to happen is what Carrie, Alan and Havana have been hard at work for a few years and you can catch their weekly episodes online at KamikazeAnimated.com

This is their second time with Art Is King but this time around their team has grown and we get to meet the rest of the talent and ask them the hard questions: is anyone making any money and when will the bag of cash drop from the sky?

On October 7th, SuperNova South hosted the classic spectacular art competition titled: Sharpie Slam 2015 at the newly minted TechSquare Labs in Midtown ATL.

Over 40 Artists participated in the biggest Art Showdown in ATL history. 6 teams of 5 artists went head to head to see who had the skills to be crowned ATL ART Champ.

Organized under the direction of Art Is King, DTM, the Sharpie Slam 2015 curator, reached out across the ATL arts community landscape and rounded up the most talented artists from the Tattoo Arts, Street Arts, Comic Books Arts, Traditional Arts and Digital Arts.

Sharpie Slam 2015 is the only event of its kind to bring in such a diverse group of artists, a true Art Community coming together in the name of art and creativity, plus a bit of prize money sponsored by SuperNova South!

Sam Flax sponsored the Coloring Table featuring PrismaColor pencils and markers. Photo Booth by YP Photo Booth sponsored by SuperNova South. Wine and Drink bar sponsored by Sales Loft RainMaker. Plus the Food Truck of the night was Happy Belly. Door prizes were sponsored by Sam Flax with Tees Sponsored by Velocity Screen Print and SuperNova South.

The Silent Auction featuring 10 Skatedecks by 10 ATL Artists was a success with the majority of the decks sold and a percentage of the proceeds to benefit the work of Art Is King. The decks were sponsored by Revolv Skate.

To MC Sharpie Slam 2015 the super hype Mr E! The Motivator brought his intense energy to kept the crowd focused on the theme of the night: creativity and competition.

The night was rocking to the sounds of true vinyl by DJ Osmose, now on his 7th year as Art Is King Collaborator and a crowd favorite across the globe!

The night was capped with prizes for First Place Team: Devi Phoenix, Second Place and in Third Place was OnyxCon.

An impromptu BBoy and B-Girl dance off led by Chris Veal delighted the crowd as the night drew to a close.

Big Ups to WSBTV for stopping by and sharing the love on their site, check it out HERE
