Justin Anderson, aka Artist 53, is a graphic designer by trade, 2D illustrator by night and sketch artist by nature. I’ve known Justin for over 10 years. Met him fresh out of art school and we’ve become friends, collaborators and shared the art life with each other ever since.

Justin’s art is deeply rooted in comics, cartoons, anime and sci-fi. Check out his Hand of Doom Series, we grew up with violent saturday morning cartoons! He’s added all of that and more in his latest coloring book and Vector Lounge Vol. 1 art book featuring his popular vector illustrations.

Justin has big plans for his art and career, take a look at his social media, website and get your own Vector Lounge Vol 1 at Artist53.com

Get Your Weight Up!

The ATL Art Community offers many opportunities to build your art career.
What are YOU going to do about it?
Picture

It's hard to balance "in the studio" with "out in the street" art time. The Key is to find and pick the events and classes that help you build your career. From Art Classes at Sam Flax, Design and Illustration at General Assembly to Art Biz Classes at C4Atlanta and online Adobe Illustrator courses at Vector Maestros.

Join a MeetUp, drop in on a drawing session at Trackside Tavern, hang out withfellow animators and comic artists at HodgePodge.
The only way to make the Art Life work for you is to put in time on that Art Life!

What are YOU going to do about it?

let me tell you about that time i lost a sponsor...

"the Art Life is not for the weak"
-DTM

I got the text late in the afternoon

I can still remember that feeling of dread and unknown (those words stand out right now) as I write this email to you. The text was from my connection in the company and he was just letting me know that the order came down to stop and cancel any support as of that day. He didn't have any information beyond what he was told to do. I felt sick.

I immediately reached out to the President of the company, the Marketing Head of the company and I didn't get a response to my texts or phone calls. These folks had been my friends for a few years and had supplied lots of support to my career and endeavors. We had texted and talked over the phone many times in the past. Now: Silence.

I had an event coming up and there was still two months left in the year of support they had promised me. It was a Friday and I had to scramble to set up next week's event, people were counting on me so I had to push out the empty feeling aside.

Writing this email is like therapy. Thanks for reading so far.

I focused on the next event, and worked on finding a replacement sponsor. Made a list of possible sponsors, tightened up my pitch, organized my proposals and got back to work.

It's been years now since that time, and I never heard back from the company and the people I knew. I did get a run around answer from someone in the company who was in charge of firing people. I didn't work for them, so why this guy? Maybe he lost the bet on who was going to tell me, plus he worked in a branch of the company that was out of state so it was easier for him to email me some nonsense. I honestly can't say what happened.
The reason I am telling you about it, besides the therapy, is to share what happened afterward.
My first step was to reach out to other companies for collaboration and support. I will tell you some tips on reaching out to sponsors, but the point is that by losing this sponsor i was then motivated to reach out to more opportunities and got more sponsors than I before.

First tip: make a list of companies you would like to see sponsor you. Not just the art stores, but the Art Companies, Printers, and even Venues. Venues are great sponsors as some are open to collaboration in their events. I have organized events with venues who provide their space as a sponsorship. Anyone who has something to support your path can be a sponsor. Make a List.

Second: Look up these companies and find out what projects they are working in that involve art and creativity. See what that company is doing that may be a fit for you. Some companies have marketing budgets for specific marketing events, those companies may not be open to new proposals, but they may be open to working with you within their current projects. Branding Fit.

Third: Find people you know who may work in that company. This is where Facebook and especially LinkedIn come in handy. Do you have a connection who works at a company you want to sponsor you? Those folks will help you get to the person responsible for the budget. Those folks you know will be your champions in getting your proposal approved. And if all else fails, those folks will help you get something from the company to support your event! Connections.

Fourth: Have a social media presence for that which you want sponsorship. And a website. What goes on that website and social media? The proof of the work you have put into your endeavor and career. When you make you pitch or submit a proposal, the first thing that the other person will do is look you up, look up your brand and look for evidence of your claims. It's extremely tough to get a sponsor for a first time thing. Sponsors like to invest in people that have a following, Sponsors will invest on events that will give them a chance to promote their brand and reach the people who are potential customers. Online Proof.

Fifth: Organize your information in a clean package. That's what we call a proposal. The Who, What, When, Where and Why of what you're about, what you are doing and what you are asking for. Have an ask. What do you want? Be specific. Money, supplies, printing, venue, materials, what is it that the specific company can provide you with? Some sponsors will supply materials. Give them a list of the materials, the name of each piece, the retail price and the overall cost of what you are asking for.
Pitch. Proposal.

You must do all the thinking up front. When you reach out to a sponsor you have to present all the information in a way that is easy to understand. They don't know you, their only responsibility is to say Yes or No. Organize all your info in a way that they will have to say Yes!

Or at least get a: "We want to hear more about this." kind of response.
Thats your way in! Now you can share more info to drive home the need to have you on their corner and how collaboration (sponsorship) is perfect.

The Extras:
Artists are notorious for doing a lot with very little. Start your events small. Collaborate with others to split the needs. As you grow your events, then you will have the proof of your concept and can start reaching out to sponsors.

But you have to start somewhere!

It was years of putting on my events when I first got important people coming to see what I was doing. Then they reached out to me and invited me to participate in their bigger events.

One More, The Biggie:
Wait, by then I had reached out to an artist who puts on Big Events, International sponsor type of Big Events. And I asked that artist for feedback on my events. He opened the gates to his brain and shared his wisdom with me. I have applied that advice to how I organize my events now. Why wouldn't I? This dude knows his stuff. He knows what he's talking about and I want to get to his level. Mentorship.

I invite him to lunch and a cup of tea (he doesn't drink coffee) when I want to ask him specific info. I am available when he calls (anytime he calls he has something to share that will improve on what I am doing). Plus I make myself useful and offer my assistance for his plans.

Mentorship and Sponsorship is a two-way street.
Don't cold email or call someone for advice or sponsorship without having built a relationship and having a history of putting in work!

What now
I was in a conformable space when I lost my sponsor and it put me in a bind. I had responsibilities and I had made promises that now I had to face without the sponsor.

I used that opportunity as motivation to branch out my sponsorship reach. I had to take a look at my work and organize the info, put together new proposals, build new relationships and keep putting in the work!

Sponsors come and go. Thats not the only time I lost a sponsor. Some sponsors move on, some sponsorships are for a short period of time, some sponsorships are a one time deal.

In every case, you have to be open to putting in work to build those relationships.

Some weeks, the Art Life is slow.

There's always a slow period in an artist's schedule.
This is where Time Management and a To-Do list is very important.

There are several things on my schedule that even when I'm not working on a client project, I still have stuff to do. My personal projects list is huge. HUGE!

Ideas come thru my brain everyday and I don't have time to explore those ideas. People, they are always sharing something exciting that I can do with my talent. I write it all down. I can't keep all those things in my head! I will forget.

Evernote. My main go to app. In Evernote I keep several notebooks with different titles and aspects of my business. I have a DTM Curriculum notebook with a long list of notes each on the different classes I teach. I have an AIK Podcast notebook with a note on each podcast produced for Art Is King, info on the podcast, guest, links, publishing dates and social media promo text copy.

And theres a few Evernote notebooks on my personal art projects. Children Books, Art Life the comic book and Art Life the mobile game (its coming along), DaCreativegenius.com website notebook, DeltaTangoMike.com website notebook, Sam Flax art classes notebook, General Assembly classes notebook, and on and on, a notebook for everything you see me do in real life and online.

I have several notebooks to keep track of my client work, personal work, community work and mentorship.

When I look at my schedule for the week and I see that my client list is getting short and I haven't added anything new to work on, then I add my personal projects to the schedule. This is my time to make moves on my personal agenda.

This is also the time to update my website, add new works to my portfolio, follow up a client with an email, visit a possible art show venue, set up meetings and run errands. This is also the time to check out a class or two, a meetup where info is shared, a group that meets on visual design, or a workshop to learn/teach Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Get Shit Done.

BTW, I use Google Calendar to keep track. It syncs with my iPhone, iPad, Galaxy Note, Mac, Windows PC and it send me reminders. I used to have a bad habit of being late for everything in my life.

Time management is not just about being on time to an appointment. Its also about keeping track of your moves, currently today and what you will be working on tomorrow and next week.

Every evening before bed I prepare to undertake the next day's to do list. Thats how serious the Art Life is to me.

See you next week at Sam Flax, General Assembly or somewhere in ATL where the Art Life is Strong!

If you ask Andy about his art, you get this answer:
Macabre Fantasy Wildlife Art, Esoterically charged flora and fauna drawing heavily on the themes of symbiotic relationships, the circle of life and the classic concept of memento mori.

If you ask me about Andy’s art, then I will tell you that he is a detailed artist who can draw animals and things that look as real as life. The mastery of pencil, ink and paint are what will attract you first into the scene, then you will notice the skulls! My favorite part are the skulls. They are everywhere.

Andy is in his first year in ATL, coming from Alabama, and he’s been making waves in the art world with 2 successful Kickstarter campaigns.

work 80, not 40

2/25/2016

Picture
"Work 80 hours on your art instead of 40 for someone else because the return on your investment is greater when you work for yourself. "

What do you mean 80 hours?!
yup.
Theres another saying that goes like this:
"Work smarter, not harder."  So which is it?!

Both. The more time you put into your talent, the closer you are at leaving a job that keeps you from your talent. But then that move makes your talent your focus when you are awake, when you are asleep, when you are with family and even on vacation.

But isn't that the case already? You already think about art all the time. Whatever is on your schedule, you cannot wait to get back to art!

That is how some of us artists are. I do not want to do anything else. I don't want to work.

Ok, Doodleslice told me I have to stop using the word "Work" when I really mean to say: "I don't want to do anything outside of art." Because as he points out, I work all the time.

But you see, my kind of work is fun to me because i get paid to do art. Every week is a different art project, every day is filled with art. And since I want to earn a particular amount of money, then I need to work on art all the time. The biggest benefit is that all the revenue and profit comes home with me.

What about the smarter, not harder?
That's the biz. With the right business plan in place, you have a path to follow that allows you to make the most out of every opportunity, project, artwork and connection. Sometimes that means saying no to an "opportunity". Sometimes that means doing art as a favor for someone or a cause. Every step is clear because you have a plan in place to produce your art and grow your business... so you can leave the job that's keeping you busy 40 hours a week!

I have a wife and kids who need my attention. There is a part of your life that needs to spend time with your loved ones. I also have to sleep! So how do we find the 80 hours?

Sometimes working on your art requires thinking, not doing. planning. scheming. Thats where the hours add up to at least 80. In the shower, while driving, while watching tv, while reading, while napping, while waiting on the bus. There is a ton of Smart Time that can be used in the development, planning and application of your art business. Work Smarter.

See, if you are consumed by art like I am, then you will not want to do anything else with your time. Your job will be your art. Your work will be your art. Your life commitment will be about your art. I want to make the most of my time with art and that means I have to plan it out and execute.

Plan the work, Work the plan.
I heard that somewhere and its real. Take advantage of your creative ideas and art by having a plan to make it successful. Then stick to the plan!

Know Your Worth

2/1/2016

Picture
Pricing of your art can be tricky and its a constant discussion between artists. I have seen artists sell their art at a loss and other artists overprice their work.

This is one of the top answers on why art doesn't sell even though other artists are selling at that same price point. You have to find the right spot for your art. Your pricing has to fit the level of your talent, the position of your brand and the materials used in the work.

There are tons of links online with information on how to price your work, but before getting lost in the sea of information, I would like to share a couple of tips.

1. Materials
You have to be able to pay for the materials used. The price of your artwork has to take into consideration the cost of the canvas, the paints, brushes, paper, pencils, markers and anything else that goes into the art.

2. Time
How long did you take in painting this particular piece? If you sell a painting for $1,000 and it took you 2 months to paint it, then you've earned $500 a month minus materials. Keep track of your time, and if you intend to one day earn with your art enough to leave a traditional job behind, then time control becomes important.

3. Market
Who are you selling to, who's coming to your shows, who is your client? What price ranges can they afford? I've been at group art shows where people are there to drink, have fun and art is part of the atmosphere. It's tough to sell a $5,000 piece of art at a setting like that.

There are other elements that come into play when pricing your work so take your time, talk to other artists and ask their opinion. You are going to get it wrong, there's no escaping the learning process!

Just remember this: the price you ask for a piece is not its true worth if it hasn't sold at that price. Experiment with your prices, try to start low and as slowly raise your prices as collectors start buying your pieces. Don't start high and then bring down the price because you have rent to pay. It devalues your brand as an artist.

Check out the upcoming events this week as we end January and start February by visiting www.ArtIsKing.org and scrolling down the home page and I will see you there!

Presentation is Everything. Its a start.

When promoting your work to potential clients and commissions, you must present your work in the same level you wish to charge.

The more you want to charge, the better your presentation must be.

Proper Presentation.
Presentation should make your brand, your art and yourself look like a professional artist, no matter at what career level you are now
Presentation is as simple as taking the time to arrange the best art in your portfolio.
Presentation is to do the best editing of the image to show the value of your work.
Presentation can be accomplished with very little money and a bit of time invested to make yourself look good.

Visual Design.
Take the time to learn how to lay text on images. Its ok to not know how to layout your promotional images, in that case get help from someone else. Throwing text on an image without rhyme or reason is Not OK.

Information.
Please include a link to purchase your work. Asking potential clients to contact you without a link to email is asking those clients to do extra work to find you. This is where a website, a simple webpage with a contact form and payment link comes in handy. You have to make it easy to collect money from clients and commissions because we want to get paid for our work, right?

There are apps and free software to help in cropping and editing the images to make them easy to share to social media. Do Not share smartphone screenshots! Take the extra time to edit the images before posting.

Remember, you want to attract attention to your art and make a sale. A series of sales creates revenue and when a client comes back to buy a second piece, they become your collector!

Focus on your Presentation, its part of the path to success.

The 4 Key Ingredients of the Art Life

1/11/2016

Picture
Whenever an artist asks me for help in selling their work, my answer always involves the 4 important ingredients in every artists business.

Here they are: Vision, Goals, Steps and Schedule.

These four ingredients require 100% participation of the artist in determining their future. We must have a Vision to aim to, a set of Goals that will allow us to achieve that Vision, an outline of the steps necessary to reach those goals and the time set aside in the schedule to allow for working on those steps.

You are invited Monday January 18, to Sam Flax and learn about the 4 Ingredients plus a step by step process to outline an easy way for each one of us to work on our Art Life! RSVP FOR FREE HERE
